Ms. Lee Ester (Pete) Thompson was born on April 2, 1937, from the union of Alfred (Buddy) and Leola Thompson in Florence, MS.
Her father was so determined to see his children receive a quality education that he would drive them from Florence to Jackson to attend Lanier High School. Pete graduated from Lanier High School in 1955 and enrolled at Jackson State College. She only completed a couple years of college initially because she wanted to work and raise a family. In 1966, she relocated from Mississippi to Chicago in search of better opportunities. After three years of living in Chicago, and living near her sister Dearlene, she returned to Mississippi to be closer to her parents and siblings.
Pete and her sister Helen were inseparable, often living together or very close by each other.
After she and Helen got their first home together, Pete returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Jackson State University in 1975. Shortly after graduating, she became an elementary teacher for the Rankin County School District and retired after 25 years of service. She was well loved by her students and co-workers as evidenced by the number of Christmas gifts she would receive each year.
Pete loved spending time with her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends of the family. Pete had three amazing children: Stephone (Stephen), Keith and Kimberly (Renee). And she was very proud of her three children and their accomplishments. When her grandchildren came along, she had just as much love for them to make them feel special. Pete had a way of making everyone she met feel like they belonged to the “Thompson” family. Anytime she spent with Frenchie, Thurman, Dearlene and Helen were some of her most memorable occasions. She loved her children with all her heart and wanted to make sure they had happy and wonderful lives.
She enjoyed life and doing activities as a family such as playing cards, attending gatherings, and going on vacation. She also loved to dress-up and attend formal events, JSU football games, going to the hair salon weekly and shopping. She and her sister would travel to New Orleans to get their hair done and shop. But her favorite activity was cooking. She loved to cook, and her meals could feed an Army. She would buy cookbooks and immediately try a new recipe each week.
Pete had an infectious smile, was very thoughtful, and caring. Sundays were always the best of times, sitting with family members and anyone who would stop by, she would offer a plate and share stories.
After a long battle with kidney failure, she finally succumbed to her illness on February 24, 2022. She was preceded in death by her beloved siblings: Kermit (brother), Azalea (sister), Ruby Lee (sister), and Dearlene (sister).
She leaves to cherish her memories her remaining siblings: Frenchie Crowley, Thurman (Argentina) Thompson and Helen Cromwell; her devoted children: Stephone (Stephen) Thompson of Jackson, MS; Keith Thompson (Ronda) of Clinton, MS; and Kimberly (Renee) Rancifer (Perez) of Clinton, MS; loving grandchildren: James, Amy, Keith Jr. (JR), Kelli, Dominque (DJ), Ashley, Isaiah and Brooke and her great grandchildren: Jayvion (JJ), Jamison, Lucius, Joi and Journi. She also leaves who she loved as her own a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
