Mary L. Smith Owens was born on August 26, 1926, to John W. Smith Sr. and Mary A.P. Smothers Smith in Madison County, MS. She attended Madison Rosenwald School, Madison, MS.
Mary accepted Christ early in life and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. O.D. Jamison at Mount Pleasant M.B. Church, Madison, MS.; after marriage to Sylvester Owens, they moved to Jackson, MS, and united with New Hope M.B. Church. Shortly after the passing of her husband she moved her membership to Virden Grove Baptist Church, Jackson, MS, where she served faithfully on the Mother Board and participated with the Women’s Auxiliaries until her health failed and she could no longer attend church services.
Those who knew her, knew her as being a beautiful spirit, full of wisdom, woman in the Lord and of life experiences. She was a very quiet, soft spoken but firm, mild mannered, patient, kind hearted, compassionate person and had all the faith that if God is in it, little becomes much. She was energetic, hardworking, continuously busy, and always gave of herself to help family, friends, and any one in need.
She departed this life on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Pine Forest Health and Rehabilitation, Jackson, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sylvester Owens Sr.; a son, Sylvester Owens Jr.; two sisters: Rosie B. Bolton and Mable M. Walls; two brothers: James Smith and John W. Smith Jr.; and her beloved pet dog; Joe.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted daughter, Bettye Owens Lewis; two granddaughters: Shantaye (Victor Sr.) Gaines and Shandra (Eric) Trussell; seven great grandchildren: LeKeita, Ari (Eugenia), Victor Jr., LaTisha, Milton, Caleb all of Jackson, MS and ShaKayla, of Fort Hood, TX; six great- great- grandchildren: Ariana, D’Asia, Alyssia, Roman, A’Niyah, and Troi ; a special friend, Mr. Sam Wiley; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Peoples Funeral home Chapel, 886 North Farish Street, Jackson, MS with her final resting place being Garden Memorial Park Cemetery, 8001 Highway 49 North, Jackson, MS.
