Obituary

Mrs. Mary L Carr Craig was born on October 22, 1941 in Florence, MS., to the late Annie Mae Brown and late Henry Carr. She was raised in a loving, hardworking family with four siblings (William “Bill” Norwood, Dorsey Carr, LV. Andrews and Viola Smith).

Mary was a born-again Christian that loved God. She accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and joined Brown Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a Deaconess, Fellowship Hall Director, Early Childhood Sunday School Teacher and a brief choir member. Mary was a very active member of her community and with the surrounding churches as well.

She received her formal education from the Rankin County school system where she graduated from McLaurin High School in Star, MS.  At McLaurin, she was a member of the school choir, basketball team, and the N.H.A Club. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Milton Craig Sr on June 12, 1964 in Terry, MS. In this union, she became Mary L. Craig and moved to Florence, MS, where they raised their three children: Milton Jr, Mildred and Cathy.

For a number of years, Mary worked at Harrisville Elementary School and Simpson Central Elementary School as a Cafeteria/Food Service Worker. She retired from Simpson Central Elementary School but matriculated into the role as Secretary for Craig’s Septic and Digging Service.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, sister, mentor and devoted friend. She was a good-spirited woman who always saw the best in people. As a spiritual leader, she strived to treat individuals with dignity and respect. She had a captivating presence that was welcoming and nurturing. Mary was easy to talk to and often the voice of reasoning.  A few of Mary’s life principles were God, family, friendship and laughter. She had the kind of laugh that made other people laugh. With an infectious personality, she easily earned love and friendship from whomever she encountered. She never met a stranger.

After a short, unexpected illness, Mary passed away on Thursday morning, June 17, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Annie Mae Brown and Henry Carr; her siblings: LV. Andrews, William “Bill” Norwood, Dorsey Carr, Viola Smith, and Lorraine C. Thames; and her grandson, Milton Craig III.

The following family members are left behind to cherish memories of Mary: her husband, Milton Craig Sr. of Harrisville, MS; her children: Milton Craig Jr. of Jackson, MS; Mildred Johnson (Ronnie) of Florence, MS; Cathy Thompson (Darryl) of Florence, MS and Kevin Jackson of Jackson, MS; Mary’s grandchildren: Brittany Craig of Oak Ridge, TN; Jeremy Robinson of Crystal Springs, MS; Kyera Craig of GA; Hilton Mozee of Atlanta, GA; Jarquiez Johnson of Hattiesburg, MS; Jabria Thompson of Oxford, MS; Kaityln Craig of Brandon, MS; Alexius Craig of Brandon, MS; and Ryan Johnson of Florence, MS; Mary’s great grandchildren: Bryanna Strange, Dallas Strange, Kailynn Craig, Bryson Craig; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
