Obituary

  Essie Mae Yates Bailey was born July 26, 1922, in Terry, Mississippi to Lincoln and Ora (Terrell) Yates. She married David Bailey in 1943.  She lived her entire life in Terry and Jackson, Mississippi.

  She was a member of St. Luther M. B. Church where she served as Baptist Training Union Director, Sunday school teacher, and member of the Missionary Society, the Beautification Club and served on the Mother's Board.

  Essie Bailey had 12 siblings, 10 of who preceded her in death.  Her 2 surviving siblings are Ora Lee Mims of Brooklyn, New York, and Marie McNeil of Jackson, Mississippi.  Affectionately known as Madear, she was the parent of 7 children, three of who proceeded her in death, Albert Bailey, Samuel Bailey, and Ernest L. Harris. She was also proceeded in death by her grandson, Leroy Hamilton, Jr.   She is survived by her children, Mary (Leroy, Sr. (deceased)) Hamilton, Helen (Edward) Bailey,  Gerline (Edward) Johnson, and Milton (Debra) Harris; two daughters-in-law, Brenda Harris, and Hazel Bailey;   20 grandchildren, including her long-time caregiver, Carshena (Tracey) Bailey; 35 great-Grandchildren;  9 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Public Visitation hours will be Friday 2/12/2021 from 12:00-7:00 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home

Funeral Services will be held Saturday 2/13/2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luther M.B. Church, 1040 Banks Street, Jackson MS and proceed to Autumn Woods Cemetery, 4000 W Northside Dr. Jackson MS.
