Mr. Roy Benson was born ten of eleven siblings on February 7, 1937, in Copiah County, Mississippi to Edward Eugene and Iola Benson.
At an early age he joined New Zion United Methodist Church where he served faithfully until his health declined. He carried a deep love for his church and church family. He was a member of the United Methodist Men and he loved singing in the Gospel Choir. One of his favorite songs that he would often sing was “Peace Be Still”. Under the great leadership of his sister Betty, the Gospel Choir recorded an album in 1978.
“Uncle Cake or Cake Baby” as family and friends affectionately called him, received his education at the William Henry Holtzclaw Negro High School. Upon receiving his education, he entered the workforce. His work ethics and desire to take care of his family led him to several jobs through the years. He was gainfully employed at General Equipment for many years. After retiring from General Equipment, he worked for the Mississippi Job Corps center for over 25 years and later began working for Sheldon Lab. Lastly, before exiting the workforce Roy was employed with the Copiah County School District (YMCA).
Roy was a loving father, grandfather, papa, uncle, and friend. He loved sharing stories, spending quality time with his family and friends, watching CNN, and cheering on the New Orleans Saints. Roy enjoyed bringing his family to the dinner table every Sunday to enjoy great food, fun, and fellowship. His smile was contagious, and his laughter was heartwarming.
