Obituary

On Sunday, March 27, 2022, God saw that Joseph Preston Johnson, Jr. (Piano) was getting tired and He summoned His angels to bring him home.

Joseph P. Johnson Jr. was born on December 8, 1951 to Joseph P. Johnson, Sr. and Webbie M. Lock-Johnson. Jr. Boy as his family affectionately knew him was the second oldest of ten children. His parents and Aunt Pearl raised their children closely, so Jr. Boy was surrounded by his sister and three female cousins. Therefore, he was a little spoiled. He exemplified a very unique personality and was cherished by his family.

At an early age, he joined the Evangelist Temple Church of God In Christ under the leadership of Bishop S. R. Chambers and Bishop J. P. Johnson, Sr. He sang in a quartet group formed by his mother with neighborhood boys and his brother, Vincent. He was active in the Youth and Adult Choir. He also enjoyed visiting churches in the Georgetown community.

He attended Sallie Reynolds, Mary C. Jones Elementary and later W. H. Lanier High School, ran track, and graduated in 1970.

Shortly after graduating, Mr. Johnson was formerly married to Shirley Alexander-Garner and to this union two children were born.

Many knew him as Piano, the singing man. He loved many things such as taking care of the elderly, his dogs, sitting around with friends, The M. L. K. parades, Lanier High School, but he mostly loved singing. His favorite songs were: “By The Grace of God” and “I Don’t Want No Peanut Butter and Jelly”, “I Want My Soul To Be Saved.”

Joseph worked in construction, landscaping and as a delivery driver for Bob’s Furniture Company for many years. Once he hung up his work clothes, he found joy in helping people in his neighborhood. Children were special to him. He would watch the children in the neighborhood, singing to them while they waited for their buses.

Joseph P. Johnson, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Bishop Joseph and Supervisor Marie Johnson; grandparents: Ruby and Jessie Johnson, Sr. and Berta and Leonard Lock; two brothers: Steve and Vincent Johnson; nephew, Vince C. Luckett, a caring brother-in-law, Dr. Fred A. Durr, Jr; and in-laws, Pearlie and Golie Alexander.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Eve Johnson (Oscar) Denton IV of Atlanta, GA; and Joseph Preston (Kajuana) Johnson III of Austin, TX; grandchildren: Oscar V and Logan of Atlanta, GA; JaMarvin (BJ) and Preston of Austin, TX; six sisters: Marilyn (James) McLaurin, Lois Thompson, Sandra Floyd, Janis Durr, Shirley (Drexter) Alexander, and Tonia Rounds; brother, Fredrick L. Johnson all of Jackson, MS; three special cousins: Cheryl, Patsy and Joyce; one aunt, Molly Lock of Gulfport, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
