James Campbell, III was born on February 23, 1935 to the late James Campbell, II and Pairlee Myles Campbell in Madison County, Mississippi. He was the 5th of 13 children. His early years were spent in Flora, MS until the family moved to Canton, MS.
He confessed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age when he attended New Mount Zion Church in Canton. He later attended Fairview Missionary Baptist Church in Madison.
He attended Canton High School in Canton, MS. After high school, James worked various jobs in agriculture, manufacturing building truck bodies, carpenter, security guard and drove a cab.
In November 1953, he married Geneva Jones (Campbell). To this union, nine children were born. James and Geneva lived in Canton and moved to Winter Garden, Florida where he worked in the orange groves for 4 years until returning to Mississippi where they settled in Jackson.
In 1973, he began working at Packard Electric as a service worker and worked his way up to become a Die Setter. He would become the Steward of Local 698 of IUE‑CWA until his retirement in 1997. James most enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards, basketball and all sorts of games.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Campbell, II and Pairlee Campbell, and his sons, Ronald Campbell and James Milton Campbell, sister Silvia Campbell‑Tolver (Gary, IN), Alice Campbell Francis (Merryville, IN) and brothers, L.C. Campbell (Jackson, MS), Eddie Campbell (Chicago, IL), and Earnest Campbell (Jackson, MS).
On Friday, February 5, 2021, James passed away peacefully at home after his battle with Alzheimer=s. He is survived by his wife Geneva, his 3 daughters, Jannie Jones (Roswell, GA), Shirley Campbell Guice (Jackson, MS), Susan Campbell (Jackson, MS), his sons, Henry Campbell (Jackson, MS), Melvin Campbell (Oxford, GA), Gus Campbell (Jackson, MS), Kenneth Campbell (Jackson, MS), his sisters, Marguerite Campbell Patterson (Fort Worth, TX), Pairlee Campbell Brookins (Jackson, MS), and Myrtis Lee Campbell Robinson (Atlanta, GA), his brothers, Jesse Campbell (Jackson, MS), Willie Campbell (Bolingbrook, IL), Matthew "Robert" Campbell (Jackson, MS), and Sylvester Campbell (Jackson, MS), 30+ grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
Visitation is Friday, February 12, 2021 at Peoples Funeral Home, 886 North Farish Street, Jackson, MS from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at New Mt. Zion M. B. Church Cemetery, Canton, MS at 11:00 a.m.
