David Marvin Bowles April 15, 1949 – March 20th, 2022, passed away peacefully at age 72. David was a lifelong bachelor who loved cats and was fond of turtles. His nickname growing up was turtle and his email started with “turtleread”. This was appropriate as his Master’s degree was in library science and his entire career consisted of college and university libraries, including River Bend Library (Coal Valley, Illinois), Sherman College of Chiropractic (Spartanburg, S.C.), and Coker Memorial library (Coker College, Hartsville, S.C.). He served as a professor of library science at both the Coker College and the school of medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Known as being Quirky, a college job was in a division of the Air America program acting as a courier between the United States and Vietnam. Run by the CIA, David had a briefcase handcuff to his wrist and made at least four covert trips delivering items, goods, people, and whatever was necessary to deliver to places that the United States military could or would not go. Because these operations were sealed by Presidential Executive Order, we only know that he traveled to Airfields called Tan Son Nhut and Cam Rahn Bay and was always met by a four-person military escort. This experience, along with his undergraduate degrees in economics and philosophy lead to a lifetime interest in politics and economics.
After losing his kidneys, he lasted through seven years of dialysis, only to be robbed at gunpoint while he was pulling his walker out of his car. Most people would have just turned over the keys when someone points a gun at them, but not David. He told the robbers that they wouldn’t get far as his car had OnStar and could be turned off remotely. Panicking, the robbers pistol-whipped him and he hit his head on the ground. Stubborn, David survived another year but with many hospitalizations.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Marvin Bowles and Glenda Bennett. David is survived by his brother, Steve Bowles, and his sister, Cindy Mathews. His extended family includes Paula Mathews (Niece), Chris Mathews (Nephew), Gordon Ronco (Nephew), and many grand nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his cats-Walmart cat, Arrowcat, and Moose cat, as well as his roommate and friend John Kramm and next-door neighbor JoAnn Hubbart as well as his best friend Bill Zahner from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Over his years, he donated to many causes including the 7th Day Adventist church, Wikipedia, American Kidney Foundation, and the Humane Society.
