Charles Edison Roach Sr. was born on October 1, 1939, in Utica, Mississippi to Johnie and Clementine Turner Roach. He was the first of two children. His parents preceded him in death.

Charles was raised in the Community of Learned and the Town of Utica. He attended Utica High School where he played football and started in the position of Center for the Utica Bulldogs.

Once Charles completed High School, he joined the Army branch of the Armed Forces. He has been stationed all over the United States, Germany, Guam, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. He served two tours of duty fighting in the Vietnam War. During his career with the military he was an Electronic Technician, Tank Armor crewman, Tank Turret Repairman, Land Combat Support Systems Test Specialist and Armament/Fire Control Specialist. He was a recipient of the following decorations, medals and campaign ribbons: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (w/3 Bronze Service Stars), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal (w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Marksman Badge and several Presidential Citations just to name a few.  He served his country for over 23 years until he retired in 1983.

During his time in the military he met and on June 1, 1965 married the love of his life - Anna Louise Austin (“Johnny Mae”) and to this union they were blessed with three wonderful children. His family journeyed everywhere his military assignments took them.

Once Charles retired from the military, he and the family settled in Jackson, Mississippi where he decided to complete his education by obtaining an Associates Degree in Automotive Mechanics from Hinds Community College and restarted his government career with the Mississippi Department of Corrections working in the Ironwood Unit at Oakley Training School as Chief of Security. This was also a full career for Charles and he retired after 20 years of service.

Charles was very active in the Church throughout his 82 years. In Germany, to his Francois Chapel COGIC church family he was affectionately known as “Papa Roach.” To his St. Mark Ministries/Resurrection Outreach Ministries church family he was “Deacon Roach.”

Everyone that knows Charles loves him – they knew he liked to joke, “trash-talk”, travel, watch every Western that was ever made at least 100 times, enjoyed football (Wingfield High School, Alcorn State University and the Raiders), barbecuing and working on anything mechanical. But most of all he loved his FAMILY.

His legacy will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Bishop Anna Austin–Roach; three children – Nikki Roach-Gary (Richard); Charles E. Roach Jr. (Dema’) and Eric G. Roach (Re’Nisha); ten grandchildren – Richard Gary II, Kori Gary, Jabari Jaami, Kylah Roach, Kyrsten Roach, Eric Roach II, Kristin Roach, Paeyton Dorris, Austin Roach and Lore’ Roach; one sister  – Judge Vicki Roach-Barnes; one brother-in-law – Eddie L.
