Obituary

Mr. Bernard Kelly  was born June 27, 1925 to the late George and Minnie Kelly in Pocahontas, Mississippi.

He accepted Christ at an early age at Baker’s Grove M. B. Church in Pocahontas, Mississippi. Bernard was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi for more than sixty years, and was ordained as a deacon on December 2, 1990. He took great pride in serving in his church and in knowing the Word of God.

Known for being a very wise man, Bernard pursued entrepreneurship in 1969 when he bought his first dump truck, followed by a second truck in 1972. He officially started Kelly Trucking in 1980. He went on to open a sandpit in Rankin County, where he served numerous commercial and municipal clients. Bernard became the first Black person to contract with the Mississippi State Highway Department in Hinds County to provide sand for the Briarwood Bridge Project. He built a successful and well respected company in the Jackson community and would later retire in 1990, attributing his successes in business and life to the blessings of God.

Bernard was blessed with thirteen children, four of which preceded him in death: Millie Hollins, Delores States, Devant Kelly Sr. and Sheila Nutall.

He is survived by Levy (Edna) Kelly, Willie V. Cooper, Robert Earl (Defronia) Kelly, Terri Gray, Jerry (Renee) Kelly, Joseph (Sherie) Dupree, Barbara Case, Emily Case, J.C. (Carolyn) States, and a son-in-law, Willie Nutall. Bernard had twelve siblings: eight of which preceded him in death: Levy Kelly, Mary Cason, Willie Kelly, Annie Brandon, Idell O’Banner, James Kelly, George Kelly, Jr. and Jessie Kelly. He is survived by Roosevelt Kelly, Bessie Ball, Mattie Douglass, Earl Kelly and a sister-in-law, Estelle Kelly. He leaves behind to mourn a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Affectionately known as “Bud” to his family, he will be remembered for his warm smile and laugh, his wonderful storytelling, his legacy as a great businessman, and how he loved his family and God. His memory will serve as an encouragement to future generations and will comfort those who loved him dearly.
